We heard about some pretty amazing March Breaks today...  swimming with sharks, spinning through the air on skis and someone saw a bobcat! Nice to get back into the 'routine' of school. 'Even Grades' had science labs today... sadly we have no photos :(  'Odd Grades' will have science labs tomorrow.  The potluck is tomorrow and students are excited! We have been busy putting together a special publication for tomorrow.  Also, we will be snowshoeing tomorrow so dress appropriately.

Almost a Perfect 29 Points in Cribbage!!! (23)

Natasha Phelps needed 3 points to win but ended up with 3 fives and 2 jacks: 23 points! Almost 29!! (four fives and a suited jack)

Walking Competition Underway!

Big White Community School has begun a promotion to see who will walk the most over one week.  Over the next three weeks students will take good care of a GPS receiver that records both their position and speed.  From that data we will be able to tell who is walking and/or skiing/boarding the most.  Good luck everyone!

Happy Valentines Day! Poems Published!

After some serious work all morning... We celebrated Valentines Day with some fun activities and a catered party!  Thank you parents!

Also... we have recently completed a study of figurative language! As a fun way to share our poetry we devoted some time in creating mini-movies in 'Stikz' format.  We hope you enjoy these 'Love Poems' as much as we did making them!

BTW:  Listen for examples of simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, personification, hyperbole and understatement!

Science on the mountain happens in interesting and varied ways...  especially with six grades!

How long will it take for the water to boil? Will being at over 1500m above sea level have an effect?

Why is the blue stuck in the top? will it reach the bottom?

The water is attracted to ebonite rod substitute! Why?

What will happen when concentrated sunlight meets a drop of water on a penny?

Evan found even distribution very quickly when the warm blue was on the bottom...
But when the warm blue was on the top... we are still waiting!

Ask a Grade 4 what happened to the water!

These Grade 6s learned how different bird beaks are suited to picking up different types of food.

Whoa!  Boiling at 80 degrees celsius?

the SMARTBoard has landed!

We have certainly had some adjustments in the last couple weeks...  6 new students, regular skating/hockey/skiing/snowboarding lessons, and now... a SMARTBoard! Mr. Bond has struggled to update this blog in a timely manner but those days should be over thanks to the hiring of some new staff in the classroom. 

Just look at who wants to use the SMARTBoard!

Is that a "SMILE" or a "SIMILE?" (actually it was much harder than that)

Onomatopoeia VS Alliteration... who will win?

Did the SMARTBoard replace the teacher?  No. But this teacher is much happier with it!  Thanks PAC! (And maintenance for installing it! )

First Weekend of Year!

Good day today!  Taught a few new students the great game of cribbage, had a math test, read some wonderful 'Story Kitchen' stories, made interesting bead creatures with Ms. Liebel, played Japanese Dodgeball, had 20 questions for our new student Natasha, started 4 new student blogs and launched a rocket into space... okay not space but about 4m into the air! (Thanks for bringing that in Lewis!  We learned the difference between chemical and physical reactions as well the chemical symbols for baking soda, vinegar, carbon dioxide, water and sodium acetate)

Vermi-rescue

Today we did some dirty work... literally!  The worms working to turn our kitchen garbage into awesome compost had too many un-welcome visitors.  MITES! Some are okay but too many make a good worm angry...

First we find the suffering worms...

then we gave them a bath to make sure no mites are piggybacking...

then we prepare the fancy clean new bin with nice hand shredded cardboard...

and finally we add the lucky 38 worms!

Paradise?

Two bins now:  "Mite Free" and "MITES 'R' US" (Hopefully any worms left over in the latter will still survive!)

Welcome Back!

So nice to be back in school today!  The break was well deserved for our star performers.  The 'North Pole Exposure' play was well received and the pot luck that followed was super tasty.  Thank you parents for the work you put in preparing props, food and moving loads of stuff, fire fighters for your generous volunteer work, Ms. Ruzicka and Mrs. Turner for your support and students for your amazing effort. We are already missing our friends Cole and Carmen who are now in India.  We will stay in touch and you will be able to read what they are up to in our next Big White Out.  As we say goodbye we say hello to two new students today:  Evan and Adam.  Welcome boys!  While printed and distributed at the concert, the December Issue of the Big White Out was never published online.  The editor sends his regrets. Please enjoy the publication in full screen!
